Tokyo Table

Tokyo Table is a special hidden place on Ekamai. The restaurant is in a nice house surrounded with a lush tropical garden.

We read that Tokyo Table specialises in Thai/Japanese fusion cuisine, the selections sounded interesting as well as being quite innovative but we were not interested in that type of food. Instead we first chose the typical, classic Japanese dishes such as sushi or Hayashi rice, to see if atleast they could do that right before we go for the more innovative stuff.

The first dish was tekka maki. The fish was fresh and rice not too sitcky. The seaweed was soft and slightly crispy. Not bad at all.

The second dish was clams in sake. The clams were good and the sake broth was tasty. I like using the empty clam shell as a spoon to sip the sake broth.

The third dish was eggplant with miso sauce. The eggplant was soft and tender with full of flavour from the miso sauce which was rich and sticky.

The fourth dish was beef carpaccio. This was a unique and strange dish. The beef carpaccio was suppose to be all raw but with this dish, the beef was sligthtly cooked at the edges. The taste of the beef was good. But, I was not impressed with this dish. It seemed flat and not exciting. Not sure why.

The fifth dish was miso khao tom. This was the only fusion Japanese/ Thai dish we ordered. Khao tom is a Thai rice soup, and the fusion part of this dish was using miso as the broth. I am strange and I do like soup with rice. This soup was hearty and filling due to the rice.

The fifth dish was cold soba noodles. I also really like ending my meal with cold soba noodles. Nothing wrong with this dish; the soba noodles were fine, the sauce to dip the noodles was sweet and sour. A good combination.

Overall; Tokyo Table was fine. However; nothing spectacular. The food was good but nothing outstanding. Maybe it was what I ordered and instead should have ordered more fusion food. We also thought the price was too expensive for what we got, which is strange since there are so many Japanese restaurants around the area fighting for our business. If Tokyo Table wants to survive; they either better improve their Japanese food or either re-look at their pricing strategy.
