Bei Otto

In July 1984, Otto Duffner established "Bei Otto" restaurant, together with a bakery and later, a butchery and delicatessen, on Sukhumvit Road between Sois 12 and 14. Since 1990 he has been located at Sukhumvit Soi 20, opposite the Windsor Suites Hotel. And ever since then, Bei Otto has been the best German restaurant in Bangkok.

Bei Otto of course has a huge German following in Bangkok but you will always see Thais eating here as well. The atmosphere and decor is as if you were sitting in Germany. I am sure Germans feel very at home when they enter Bei Otto. The food is the hero of the place. Authentic, heavy and hearty German food.

Even though there were only three of us; we ordered the special German sausage, deep fried pig knuckle and sour crout platter. The platter could have fed a family of ten. The home made sausages are always amazingly yummy at Bei Otto, they are alwasy big, succulent and tasty. The pig knuckle is deadly delicious; the skin is fried perfectly that the skin is crunchy and crackling. The pig meat is tender and falls apart at the touch. And the sour crout is everyone's favourite. They give you a kilo of the stuff.

Though we ordered a huge sausage platter; we also ordered the suckling pig. When it arrived; we all stared with amazement how good it looked. The pig skin was crispy and crackling, the meat so juicy and tender. We 'pigged' out!!!

Overall, Bei Otto is the place for a relaxed atmoshpere, hearty and heavy food, good service and value for money (the portions are huge). No wonder it has been around for so long and is a favourite of so many people.
